Local Wise businesses, Cavalier Pharmacy and A&G Coal Corporation will sponsor major awards in this year's Lonesome Pine Band Festival to be held on October 1.

Cavalier Pharmacy will sponsor the Reserve Grand Champion Award which is presented to the second highest finishing band of the day in competition. A&G Coal will sponsor the David Tipton Soloist Award, an award presented to the best overall performance by an individual during the festival, regardless of classification. The award is named for the late David Tipton, a former area band director and musician.

The UVa-Wise Marching Cavaliers set to perform at Lonesome Pine Band Festival

Flight. Man has always wanted to soar with the birds.

The Marching Highland Cavaliers celebrate flight with their 2011 show “Free to Fly.” The show opens with an original selection written by senior music education student Jerry Gibbs entitled “Free to Fly.” We then go into free fall with “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked.” The movie Moulin Rouge gave us out next selection, the beautiful ballad, “One Day I’ll Fly Away.” The show closes with a wonderful medley from the movies “The Wiz” and “The Wizard of Oz” entitled “Home/Over the Rainbow.”

The Marching Highland Cavaliers, in addition to their home football schedule, perform exhibitions in local and regional band festivals. This year, The Lonesome Pine Band Festival will feature The Marching Highland Cavaliers in exhibition for the visiting crowd at Carroll Dale Stadium. The celebration of flight takes place on October 1 in Wise. For more information, please contact Richard Galyean, director of bands, via phone 276-328-0235 or email at bands@uvawise.edu.
